I’ve been watching way too many old fashion shows on TV lately. And let me tell you…most of these clothes were NOT meant to be timeless. Entertaining, at least! :D

ps. real post coming as soon as I leave the house. I’ve had no reason to get dressed for the past 2 weeks!

expensive vs. thrifty

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about brand-name clothing versus no-name clothing. Is it really worth the extra cash for something that has a label on it, or are you only paying for the ‘privilege’ of wearing a certain brand? I think that maybe for some brands, you’re paying more for quality, whilst others charge you to be a walking billboard for their company. How can you figure out the difference? Or should you just buy something secondhand? Well, there are a few things to consider…

Check where the item is made. Nothing’s worse then paying $75 for a top and going home just to realize that it was made in China for probably around 25 cents. However, just because something’s made in the US or Canada, it’s not always a guarantee that it was produced fairly. If you’re going to invest in a really expensive item, why not do a little research first and check out the company’s labour practices? See if their employees appear to generally be happy, and if they let them unionize.

See what materials were used. Thank god, being environmentally friendly is finally being brought to the general public’s attention. Cotton is one of the world’s most popular fabrics, but it’s also one of the most pesticide-intensive crops out there. A pound of chemicals goes into the creation of just one cotton t-shirt! If everyone could find an alternative fabric, or even better, buy a shirt secondhand, the world would be a lot better off.

Consider making your own or purchasing a knock-off. Do you really want to look like anyone else anyways? I’ve bought a lot of expensive clothing over the last few years and later wished that I’d just held out a few more weeks and gotten something similar for half the price. However, you’ve still got to be careful that the cheaper version is going to hold up and that it was made fairly. If the item is something that you think you have the skills to create on your own, go for it! You can even modify details that you don’t like, such as colour or texture.

Think about how long the item will be wearable. If you’re going for a great pair of jeans or a timeless bag, it can be worth the extra dough because you’re purchasing something that will last you a few years at the least. It’s not usually a great idea to spend all your cash on trendy designs that will be out of style in a few months unless you’ve got a LOT more disposable income then I do!

Happy shopping!

I’ve found yet another site that I want to buy out. While not exactly provident, Blood is the New Black has TONS of the coolest t-shirts I’ve ever seen, and its a little more low-profile then Threadless so not a whole bunch of people are going to have the same shirts.

Damn you, t-shirt obsession.

As soon as I’m not sick, that is…oh, my head is cut off because I look terrible! The see-through-ness of my tights is annoying, and I think I’m gonna have to either accept it or start doubling up.

Alright, so if it’s possible to be in love with an online store then I’ve fallen pretty hard. Ragtrader’s store is one of the nicest I’ve seen on Etsy. I want to buy basically everything, and I’m definitely getting the locked heart/key necklace and prying the key off to make a necklace set for me and my boyfriend. Aw! Although it was hard to narrow it down, here are my favorites from the shop:

These are going on my Christmas list.

So I was hit with fashion inspiration and I’m wearing the gold shirt and dark blue/white cardigan i bought a couple days ago as well as that belt with the interesting buckle at my waist. I WOULD take a picture, but unfortunately, I’m too lazy to change out of my comfy PJ pants! Oh well, at least I have an idea for something to wear if I ever get better and leave the house.

I thought I’d get it all in one place, and with links to styles I like to boot! I think I’ll be able to find a lot of this stuff with some careful hunting at the thrift stores.

It seems this list just gets longer and longer…

…I really need to hang up this huge pile of clothes that is sitting outside my bedroom door!  Who knew that closet cleaning would be such a HUGE task? Maybe I need to do this a little more regularly.

Maybe these posts will just become a regular thing. This is a gorgeous ring that has “as you wish” stamped inside of it. Princess Bride!! YAY!

thrifting!

Me and my lovely mother went to a couple of our favourite thrift stores today. I found a ton of stuff:

These bags! The red and white one was so odd that I had to buy it. My mom thinks it’s made out of old bleach bottles. I think I’ll put magazines in it or something as it’s not very practical to carry around. The blue Yamaha one has a name on the bottom, which is pretty cool too. And they were all $1. :)

As soon as I saw this top, I knew I would end up buying it. I have too many shiny items of clothing as it is, but it would look so good belted at the waist… and for $8!

This is another top that I knew would look good belted. I’m in love with the pattern. $5 I think?

SCARVES! The white one has the most amazing texture to it, almost like a ruffled chip, and these two look great together. $1 each.

Belts and suspenders and sweatervests, oh my!
I have a thing for belts. I probably have around 25, and I usually buy at least one when I go to a thrift store. The brown one has the coolest buckle ever. And I’ve been looking for suspenders and a sweatervest forever! Everything was $3 each.

A successful day, I think!
